The announcement of this new contract was made by Boeing itself on its official news website. In the post, the company detailed its participation in the Evolved Strategic Satellite Communications (ESS) program for the development of two satellites, with the possibility of building two more in the future.

“The U.S. needs a strategic national security architecture that functions flawlessly, with the highest level of protection and capability,” said Kay Sears, vice president and general manager of Boeing Space, Intelligence and Weapon Systems, according to the Boeing Newsroom.

The satellites will be used to transmit strategic data to the Space Force and “will use a highly protected waveform and classified technologies developed in partnership with the U.S. Department of Defense.”

“We’ve designed an innovative system to provide assured communication to address an evolving threat environment in space,” Kay added.

“The result for our nation will be the delivery of resilient space capabilities that command and control our nuclear forces in all operational environments — critical functions required for enduring nuclear deterrence,” the Space Force said in a statement.
